Thoracic surgery
Precision thoracic surgery, with a human touch
The Thoracic Surgery Service at Olympia Centro Médico Pozuelo, led by Dr. Francisco Javier Moradiellos Díez, a pioneer in robotic thoracic surgery, offers a comprehensive and precise approach to treating diseases of the chest.
We specialise in the treatment of hyperhidrosis, congenital chest deformities (such as pectus excavatum) and lung cancer and other malignant pathologies.
Our approach is always multidisciplinary and human, combining experience, technological innovation and a personalised plan for each patient.
Advanced surgical technology
- Robotic surgery with the Da Vinci system
Robotic surgery with the Da Vinci system
The Da Vinci robot is the most advanced system for performing minimally invasive thoracic surgery. It offers high-definition three-dimensional vision and surgical precision superior to that of the human hand, all through incisions of just one centimetre. However, technology alone does not guarantee results: each movement is controlled in real time by the surgeon, whose experience is key to harnessing the full potential of the system.
Dr Moradiellos is one of Spain’s most experienced specialists in robotic thoracic surgery. He has performed more than 550 procedures using this technique and has trained more than half of the Spanish teams currently working with this technology.
- Three-dimensional reconstruction and 3D printing
Three-dimensional reconstruction and 3D printing
We work with state-of-the-art imaging technology: 3 Tesla magnetic resonance imaging and Photon-counting CT scans. These tests enable us to generate accurate three-dimensional models of the rib cage and its organs, which are essential for planning complex surgeries, manufacturing customised implants, and selecting the safest and most effective surgical strategy in each case, offering accurate and predictable planning.
- High-precision laser surgery
High-precision laser surgery
We use state-of-the-art laser systems with dual wavelength and small-calibre fibres for procedures that require maximum selectivity: sympathectomy for hyperhidrosis, removal of deep lung metastases, or combined robotic surgery. This technology preserves healthy tissue and reduces surgical trauma.
Featured treatments

Hyperhidrosis: definitive treatment using laser sympathectomy
Primary hyperhidrosis, especially palmar hyperhidrosis, can have a disproportionate impact on quality of life, affecting personal and work relationships as well as emotional wellbeing. At our Sweat Unit, we offer a step-by-step, personalised approach, starting with non-invasive medical alternatives and culminating, when indicated, in definitive surgical intervention.
Dr. Moradiellos was an innovator in the use of laser energy for endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy. This technique, which is performed through a single incision of a few millimetres in each armpit, allows the corresponding section of the sympathetic chain to be removed with high precision, without the need for surgical clips or staples.
The procedure is short, performed under general anaesthesia, and allows for a quick return to normal activities. In cases of palmar hyperhidrosis, the definitive resolution rate exceeds 95%. For most of our patients, it represents a decisive change in their daily lives, restoring confidence and freedom in social and professional situations.

Pectus excavatum and other chest deformities
Chest deformities such as pectus excavatum are relatively common and, in most cases, their impact is mainly aesthetic. However, we know that they can profoundly affect self-esteem, social life, and sports activity.
At our centre, we perform a comprehensive assessment that includes a specialised physical examination. We supplement this with advanced imaging tests and functional studies, as well as assessments by other professionals, in order to rule out any associated respiratory or cardiovascular disorders.
When treatment is deemed appropriate, we propose the most suitable option based on the patient’s thoracic morphology, functional impact and expectations. We offer a range of surgical options: minimally invasive techniques, such as the Nuss procedure or the Pectus-Up system, as well as customised silicone implants for cosmetic correction.
Our priority is to offer effective, safe solutions. This is why we only recommend surgery in cases where, after rigorous evaluation, we believe it can provide significant benefit. However, we believe that anyone with pectus excavatum or another chest deformity can benefit from a specialist assessment that allows them to understand their situation and make informed decisions.

Lung cancer and thoracic neoplasms: high-precision surgical approach
Thoracic surgery is the main curative option in the treatment of lung cancer and other thoracic tumours when diagnosed at localised stages. Our approach combines strict adherence to oncological principles with a firm commitment to the least invasive and most advanced techniques.
Dr. Moradiellos was the first surgeon in Spain to systematically incorporate robotic lung surgery using the Da Vinci system. With more than 550 procedures performed, his experience allows him to offer patients the benefits of high-precision surgery: less post-operative pain, shorter hospital stays and faster functional recovery.
We also use complementary technologies such as laser surgery to preserve lung tissue and customised chest wall reconstruction when necessary. Each case is assessed by a multidisciplinary committee comprising specialists in medical oncology, radiation oncology, pulmonology and radiology, in order to offer a tailored, evidence-based treatment strategy.

Second surgical opinion in complex cases
The treatment of thoracic cancer is becoming increasingly complex and personalised. Sometimes, the best alternative is not immediately obvious, or the only option. That is why we offer a surgical second opinion service for complex oncological cases.
We review all available clinical information, request additional tests when necessary, and clearly outline reasonable treatment options. We are committed to honesty: we do not offer unrealistic solutions, but neither do we shy away from exploring promising alternatives, always with realism, rigour and humanity.
