Rheumatology is the medical specialty that is dedicated to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the locomotor system, that is, the set of diseases that manifest predominantly in bones, joints, muscles, tendons and ligaments that do not follow from indirect or immediate trauma. It is also the science responsible for studying autoimmune pathologies, diseases in which the own immune system attacks the organs of the body giving rise to diseases and injuries of very diverse nature.
Among the pathologies that belong to the field of rheumatology are: osteoarticular diseases of non-traumatic origin, inflammatory arthropathies such as rheumatoid arthritis, endocrine-metabolic diseases of the locomotor system, complex generalized pain syndromes such as fibromyalgia syndrome, connective tissue diseases, such as systemic lupus erythematosus, or vasculitis, among others.
