Diseases associated with chronic venous insufficiency affect more than 50% of the population
The Angiology and Vascular Unit of the Quirónsalud Marbella Hospital has consolidated its healthcare project with the addition of new experts. Out specialist unit is a reference in the province.

Our veins carry blood to the heart to contribute to the blood filtering function. When this function is not accomplished properly, the waste is not removed and remains in the circulatory system causing the progressive worsening of the individual’s health. This is how venous vascular pathologies originate and they are a highly common disease. Doctor Paolo Casoni, the Specialist of the Angiology and Vascular Surgery Unit of the Quirónsalud Marbella Hospital explains that "Diseases associated with chronic venous insufficiency are estimated to affect over 50% of the population. The predominant patient profile is an adult over 60 years old, and it is predicted that in the next few years this disease will experience a progressive increase in connection with the ageing of the population".
It was notoriously the case that a high percentage of the cases associated with circulatory issues were overseen or considered by the patients as a mere cosmetic issue. As the expert points out "30% of the patients having consultation with their doctors about their visible veins (spider veins) turned out to be the tip of the iceberg, i.e., patients with symptoms of a more concerning problem that could derive in varicose veins, phlebitis or thrombosis".
The specialist of the Marbella hospital vouches for a "global and comprehensive" healthcare approach when providing a diagnosis and assessing the health of each patient since "the patient with phlebopathy tends to have other organs or functions affected such as the skin, the heart or the metabolism. All patients with oedemas on their limbs or swollen legs can be suffering from metabolic or cardiac problems, but also insufficiency of the veno-muscular pump that requires attention" specifies Doctor Casoni.
The Phlebologist is part of the team of experts of the Angiology and Vascular Surgery Unit of the Marbella hospital led by Doctor Fernando Gallardo. His 40 years’ experience in the profession are a guarantee for the diagnosis and treatment of the most complex cases. Additionally to his medical consultations, Casoni also teaches doctors specialising in this area such as Doctor Matteo Pizzamiglio, with whom he works in a highly successful medical-scientific tandem at their consultation in Marbella.
The Angiology and Vascular Surgery Unit stands out for the promotion of a specialist approach which elevates the phlebology speciality to a higher level, with the main goal of providing less aggressive treatments, especially in the area of surgery. In the diagnostic area, the efforts focus on anatomic and haemodynamic studies that are increasingly more accurate.
