One of Marbella’s most relevant social events, i.e. the gala dinner in support of the Spanish Association against Cancer, was held on 3rd of August. On its thirty-ninth year, this philanthropic event is one of the most senior on the Costa del Sol and gathers prominent people and companies of the Malaga province. The purpose of the event is to raise funds to contribute to research projects and the free-of-charge programs and services being provided by this non-government organisation to patients with the disease and their families.

Quirónsalud Marbella Hospital is one of the participating entities in this solidary event, which is usually attended by the members of the Oncology Unit and other specialities involved in the process of detection, treatment and recovery of oncologic patients. Doctor Jorge Contreras, the Head of the Comprehensive Oncology Unit of our hospital states: "While we deal with the clinical side of things, the other aspect of patients’ lives, this is, the family and social environment, is where entities such as the Spanish Association against Cancer come into play. These kinds of gala events provide us with the opportunity to support the huge work carried out by its volunteers".

In the latest decade the field of medicine has added a humane perspective to its protocols that promotes the involvement of various disciplines with an aim to offering a comprehensive support. The expert advises: "We like to provide a comprehensive service where, in addition to the scientific side, we can take care of other aspects such as the emotional, psychological o nutritional concerns".

In the opinion of Doctor Contreras, this added sensitivity has characterised the creation of the Comprehensive Oncology Unit, a "new cancer diagnosis and treatment model that brings together all the services a patient might require throughout their recovery. From the point of view of coordination, we can provide everything that is necessary, whether this may be surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, etc."

On of the differential factors of the Comprehensive Oncology Unit is the networking model involving the Quirónsalud hospitals of Marbella, Malaga and Campo de Gibraltar. In this sense, our Doctor highlights that "every oncologic patient being seen at Quirónsalud Marbella Hospital receives a therapy solution decided by an oncology committee, which means that the decision is not based on the opinion of one healthcare professional but on a consensus of all the experts (surgeons, oncology doctors, radiotherapists…)".

At Quirónsalud Marbella Hospital, we are fully aware of the added stress and anxiety that a cancer diagnosis can cause and we offer immediate consultation to those contacting us to request a first appointment with the Oncology Unit. We have also opened various channels for patient assistance to guarantee direct communication with our hospital, such as our web page, Mi Quirónsalud app and a telephone number, i.e. +34 952 774 200.
