ALLERGY
Quirónsalud Marbella Hospital has a dedicated Allergy Service available to all patients. Allergies can affect the skin, the respiratory system, the gastrointestinal tract and the cardiovascular system, a problem that is becoming increasingly common.
An allergy is an abnormal reaction of the body on contact with certain external substances known as allergens. The most common are found in plant pollens (grasses and olive trees), house dust mites, moulds, animal dander, hymenoptera venom (bees and wasps), latex, and certain foods and medicines.
The prevalence of allergic disease has risen significantly in recent years. Several studies suggest that, between 2015 and 2020, allergic conditions could affect up to 50% of the general population in developed countries. As a result, recent years have brought major scientific progress and improved treatment options for allergic disease (medicines, allergen-specific immunotherapy).
This genuine rise in allergic conditions is down to three main factors:
- Allergy has a genetic basis with a strong family pattern, meaning it can be passed on to children.
- Greater environmental exposure to new allergenic substances, or increased exposure to environmental allergens generally.
- The presence of highly irritant pollutants in the air of large urban or industrial areas.
Allergies can affect the skin, the respiratory system, the gastrointestinal tract and the cardiovascular system. The most common allergic conditions include: rhinitis, conjunctivitis, extrinsic (allergic) asthma, atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, urticaria, angioedema, anaphylaxis, food allergy, drug allergy, latex allergy and hymenoptera venom allergy.
