Neurology is the area of medicine that deals with diseases of the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) as well as the peripheral (nerves and muscles). The prevalence of neurological diseases is very high as well as their potential morbidity.
Highlights include diseases such as migraine or headache, Parkinson's disease, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, polyneuropathies, myopathies, stroke and Alzheimer's. All these diseases require a precise diagnosis for which the neurologist's clinical knowledge is combined with the most sophisticated explorations such as magnetic resonance, evoked potentials, electromyogram, electroencephalogram, and doppler of supra-aortic trunks. Likewise, cognitive evaluation is necessary through sophisticated neuropsychological studies.
