The Dermatology Service at Quirónsalud Marbella Hospital offers botulinum toxin treatment, so you can stop worrying about excessive sweating.
What is botulinum toxin?
Botulinum toxin is a highly potent neurotoxin that blocks the release of acetylcholine at peripheral cholinergic synapses, and has been shown to reduce sweat production in the areas of skin where it is injected. Its main therapeutic effect comes from its action at the neuromuscular junction, where it causes paralysis and relaxation of the muscles injected.
What does treatment involve?
It is delivered by micro-injections into the area being treated, in a session lasting around 30–40 minutes that can be carried out in the dermatologist's clinic.
For the underarms, local anaesthetic is not usually needed, and patients can go about their normal routine afterwards.
Treatment needs to be repeated every 6–9 months, which is how long the effect of the toxin lasts. A reduction in sweating — almost total — begins within a few days of treatment.
Botulinum toxin treatment for hyperhidrosis leads to high levels of patient satisfaction and can significantly improve quality of life.
