Sleep and engineering experts gather at Ruber Internacional Hospital to innovate in the treatment of apnoea

On Saturday, the Multidisciplinary Sleep Unit at Ruber Internacional Hospital held a scientific meeting focused on therapeutic innovation for obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), one of the sleep-related breathing disorders with the greatest impact on the health and quality of life of the population.
Entitled ‘Sleep apnoea: beyond CPAP treatment’, the clinical session focused on new personalised diagnostic and therapeutic strategies that expand the options beyond conventional continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) treatment, especially in patients with low adherence or specific indications.
The conference featured the participation of Adrián Martínez Cendrero, PhD in Industrial Engineering and expert in the design of personalised medical devices, and Álvaro Troyano Ropero, specialist in 3D printing technologies applied to medicine, two leaders in the transfer of technological innovation to the clinical field.
The programme began with a presentation by Dr Pilar Rubio Bueno, a specialist in maxillofacial surgery and sleep expert for the Spanish Sleep Society (SES), who provided an update on the approach to sleep-disordered breathing from the International Sleep Consensus, analysing its impact on health and the therapeutic strategies currently available.
Next, Dr Martínez Cendrero addressed the integration of three-dimensional medical imaging and digital articulators, showing how advanced craniofacial image processing allows the generation of clinically reliable models (STL) aimed at personalising sleep apnoea treatments.
The session ended with a presentation by Álvaro Troyano Ropero, who delved into additive manufacturing procedures for medical devices, detailing the materials, quality controls and validation processes necessary to ensure the accuracy, reproducibility and safety of customised devices.
The conference is part of a pioneering initiative by the Multidisciplinary Sleep Unit at Ruber Internacional Hospital, aimed at reinforcing its commitment to excellence in care, advanced training and the development of individualised solutions for patients with sleep disorders, integrating technological innovation and clinical practice.
