Dr Elena Carrillo de Albornoz, medical director of the Assisted Reproduction Unit at Ruber Internacional Hospital, recently participated in the round table discussion on ‘Controversial aspects of implantation’ during the Advances Meeting in Fertility 2025, a leading scientific meeting held at the MEEU Space in Madrid and organised by IBSA (Institut Buichimique, S.A.).

During her presentation at the session entitled ‘The role of the microbiome as a biomarker for reproductive success’, Dr Carrillo de Albornoz shared her clinical experience and the round table moderator, Juanjo Espinós, president of the Spanish Fertility Society, opened an interesting debate on the role of the endometrial microbiome and the diagnostic difficulties of chronic endometritis, two key factors in the prognosis of fertility treatments.

The specialist addressed key issues regarding the timing and methodology of diagnosing chronic endometritis, as well as the differential criteria between endometrial dysbiosis and chronic endometritis, topics of great relevance in the context of implantation failure and recurrent miscarriage.

‘Post-treatment monitoring is essential to confirm the resolution of endometritis and ensure an optimal endometrial environment before a new embryo transfer,’ emphasised Dr Carrillo de Albornoz, who also insisted on the need for standardised protocols and structured follow-up to improve reproductive outcomes.

The meeting brought together leading national specialists in assisted reproduction, becoming a high-level scientific forum where the latest advances in understanding the endometrial environment and its impact on reproductive success were discussed.
