Dr. Isabel Garabito, Head of the Ophthalmology Department at Hospital Ruber Internacional, participated as a speaker at the General Meeting on Innovation in Ophthalmology 2026, organized by the Bamberg Foundation with the support of the Royal National Academy of Medicine of Spain. During the event, she addressed the latest advances in retinal pathology, uveitis, and the ocular surface, within a context marked by the technological and biomedical revolution in the sector.

During her presentation, she emphasized how ophthalmology is evolving toward a model based on precision medicine, with therapies that not only aim to slow disease progression but also offer potentially curative solutions. In the field of the retina, she highlighted the importance of next-generation anti-VEGF treatments, as well as the growing role of gene therapy and cell therapies in conditions such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and inherited retinal diseases.

She also underscored pharmaceutical innovation, with new intravitreal and systemic drugs for the treatment of uveitis, including biological therapies that improve the control of ocular inflammation. At the same time, she pointed out advances in the treatment of dry eye, with new cyclosporine formulations, innovative eye drops, and technologies such as intense pulsed light and nasal stimulation devices.

Another key focus of her presentation was digitalization, highlighting the impact of artificial intelligence and Big Data on early diagnosis and the remote monitoring of ocular diseases, enabling improved prognosis and optimization of healthcare resources.

In conclusion, Dr. Garabito stressed that the future of ophthalmology lies in more effective, personalized treatments and in sustained-release delivery systems that improve patient adherence, reducing the healthcare burden and the number of visits.
