New perspectives on fertility. Dr Yosu Franco presents his study on disposable embryos in Lisbon

Last Saturday, Lisbon hosted the Annual Meeting of the Embryology Section of the Portuguese Society of Reproductive Medicine, a key event that brings together leading specialists in the field of assisted reproduction every year. The forum is a space for scientific exchange where the latest advances in embryology, laboratory techniques and treatments to improve fertility success rates are discussed.
Among the prominent speakers was Dr Yosu Franco, Laboratory Director and Scientific Director of the Assisted Reproduction Unit at Ruber Internacional Hospital, who presented a pioneering study on the efficacy and rate of newborns obtained from embryos initially considered disposable.
His presentation generated great interest, offering an innovative vision on the use of embryos with limited development potential, which until now had not been taken into account in fertility programmes. This line of research opens up new perspectives in clinical practice, expanding the possibilities of success for couples and patients with reduced reproductive options.
The meeting was attended by international experts and featured panel discussions and scientific sessions presenting the latest advances in embryo culture techniques, embryo selection and improvements in laboratory protocols. All of this reinforces the importance of continuing research in the field of embryology as a driver of progress in reproductive medicine.
Dr Franco stressed that this type of work ‘allows us to rethink embryo selection criteria and offer new opportunities to those seeking to fulfil their desire to become parents’. With studies such as this, Ruber Internacional Hospital continues to promote innovation, research and excellence in assisted reproduction treatments.
