Sustainability
At Quirónsalud, we put forth our utmost effort to continue protecting both people's health and our environment. That’s why we are committed to the United Nations 2030 Agenda and use its Sustainable Development Goals to help us prioritize our initiatives, fully aware of our ability to make a positive impact in building a fairer and more sustainable world.
Specifically, we aim to lead through our actions and strategies in advancing SDG 3, which now takes on even greater significance: "Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages."
At Quirónsalud, the health of our environment is of growing and paramount importance. We need healthy ecosystems to ensure the health and well-being of people.
We have remained steadfast in our core principles of environmental action, promoting eco-efficiency and minimizing the impact of our waste.
We have also worked to raise awareness—both internally and externally—about responsible environmental management in decision-making and business operations, as well as in everyday habits and consumption practices.
At Quirónsalud, we apply the precautionary principle to minimize the environmental impact of our activities, taking appropriate preventive measures and continuously improving our processes to become more environmentally friendly.
We are committed to seeking solutions with even greater dedication, bearing in mind that our mission is to safeguard people’s health. For this reason, we at Quirónsalud embrace the challenge of sustainable development and uphold our core environmental principles:
- Promoting eco-efficiency through the rational use of natural resources and a strong commitment to the fight against climate change.
- Preventing pollution by minimizing waste and encouraging the use of environmentally friendly products.
- Raising awareness about responsible environmental management in both decision-making and business operations, as well as in everyday habits and consumption practices.
Over the years, as part of the group’s corporate strategy, we have expanded our environmental certification efforts with the goal of achieving ISO 14001 environmental management certification for all our hospitals in Spain.
Likewise, we are committed to the continuous improvement of energy management in our hospitals. We aim to analyze energy consumption and implement optimization measures, thereby contributing to the fight against climate change and working toward ISO 50001 certification.
Energy efficiency and minimizing the environmental impacts associated with energy consumption are a top priority for us. Hospitals are facilities that require substantial energy consumption, as they operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, without interruption, and require special conditions for air conditioning and air renewal for patient safety and comfort.
We conduct monthly energy consumption monitoring at each of our hospitals, regularly analyzing the results in collaboration with an energy manager who advises the group on optimizing energy use.
Environmental health is directly linked to human health, and it is important to be aware of the risks that climate change can pose to people's health and well-being. For this reason, at Quirónsalud, we implement effective solutions to help reduce emissions generated by our activities, striving to achieve a more sustainable business model that respects the environment in which we operate, while also raising awareness about the effects of climate change.
In 2019, we updated and optimized the calculation of Quirónsalud’s Carbon Footprint in collaboration with Ecodes and CeroCO2, a pioneering initiative in Spain aimed at reducing the climate impact caused by business activities. This initiative facilitates and promotes the involvement of all social actors in addressing climate challenges.
We are aware of the specific waste generated by our centers as a result of our activities, which is why we are implementing an Intrahospital Waste Management Procedure across all our Group hospitals.
We aim to reduce our environmental impact year after year, and to achieve this, we have set specific goals related to improving waste segregation. This includes promoting training and monitoring the quantities of waste generated, categorized by type.
