Obstructive sleep apnea is a respiratory disorder characterized by episodes of partial or total collapse (closure) of the upper airway during sleep. These collapses lead to a complete (apnea) or partial (hypopnea) interruption of breathing, causing recurrent awakenings throughout the night.

Obstructive sleep apnea is a common and potentially serious health problem that affects billions of people worldwide and has significant short- and long-term health consequences.

Among its most common symptoms are loud snoring, gasping for air during sleep, waking up with a dry mouth, morning headaches, and excessive daytime sleepiness.

The diagnosis and treatment of suspected cases of obstructive sleep apnea require a multidisciplinary team involving all levels of care. Diagnosis includes a complete medical history, evaluation of sleep history, a physical examination, and a polysomnography or sleep study—an exam that records certain bodily functions while the patient is asleep.

Our hospital has a Sleep Unit that brings together the expertise of renowned specialists from all medical fields involved in the diagnosis and treatment of obstructive sleep apnea.
