Oculomotor Paralysis
Eye movement occurs thanks to the nerves that innervate the extraocular muscles. If these nerves are unable to perform their function, the muscle cannot move, resulting in paralysis of the affected nerve.
Causes
The causes of oculomotor paralysis are varied and may include vascular problems, trauma, infections, neurological diseases, tumors, among others.
Symptoms
Symptoms may include:
- Blurred vision
- Double vision (diplopia)
- Drooping eyelid (ptosis)
- Changes in pupil size and function
Treatment
Depending on the case, treatment may involve observation, occlusion (patching the eye), prisms, botulinum toxin injections, or surgery.
