5D Ultrasound
The 5D ultrasound allows obtaining three-dimensional images in motion with high resolution. Its main application is fetal study to detect organ malformations and identify facial features.

General Description
The 5D ultrasound is characterized by providing three-dimensional images in motion and with high resolution, meaning very clear images with color modification and light focal adjustments to make the result more realistic. It is commonly used to show the fetus in pregnancies between 23 and 29 weeks.
During this procedure, ultrasound waves are used. When these waves hit the tissues, they produce echoes that can be translated into images with the help of a computer.
Thanks to the high resolution of the images, not only are the fetal facial features visible, but it is also easier to detect malformations.
When is it recommended?
It is recommended to have 5D ultrasounds from the 23rd week of pregnancy, when both the size of the fetus and the amount of amniotic fluid are ideal for an optimal result.
How is it performed?
A 5D ultrasound follows the same procedure as a traditional ultrasound. To begin, a gel is applied to the abdomen to help capture the images. Then, the transducer, a manual probe, is moved over the skin to emit ultrasound waves and capture the echoes, which are used to generate images on the computer.
Risks
The 5D ultrasound does not present any health risks, neither for the pregnant woman nor for the fetus.
What to expect from a 5D ultrasound
Women undergoing a 5D ultrasound are familiar with the procedure, so they know that the gel may be cold and that, at times, it is necessary to apply slight pressure to obtain the necessary images.
The 5D ultrasound is often an exciting moment for expectant parents, as they look forward to seeing their baby's face and movements. Therefore, it can be disappointing if the fetus is facing away or remains still during the test. To try to avoid this, it is usually recommended to bring some sweet food, like a few pieces of chocolate, to encourage movement if necessary.
This procedure usually lasts about 30 minutes and is performed on an outpatient basis. The results are available immediately.
Specialties that request the 5D ultrasound
The 5D ultrasound is performed at the request of gynecologists and obstetricians.
How to prepare
No special preparation is required for a 5D ultrasound. However, it is recommended not to use creams before the test to avoid the formation of a greasy film on the skin that could interfere with the ultrasound.
